POSTCARD TIPS & IDEAS

We love postcards because not only are they cheap to mail they are also very versatile. They can be used to announce sales and promotions, they can be used as reminders, to announce new addresses, to announce events, they can also be used as invitations.

Remember to stick to the point when designing your postcard; try not to confuse your reader with too much information. A postcard is meant to give only essential information. If you need more space than a postcard has to offer then you should consider printing on a flyer or brochure. If your reader only looks at the postcard once, you want to make sure that they will get your message. For mailings, choose a sturdy card stock that will not get easily damaged in the mail.

If you are designing your postcard here are a few ideas:

Include all necessary information.

Make sure that you are including the information that the recipient will need. E.g. if you are announcing a sale, include the sale amount, the length of the sale and the items that are on sale. If you are announcing an event include the venue, date and time and contact information.

Choose photographs, backgrounds and other art carefully.

Photographs, backgrounds and other graphic images can make any printed piece very appealing but if composed incorrectly they will spoil the job. If you are using a background make sure that it is suitable and it does not “drown” out the important information. For best printing results, photographs and other graphics must be high resolution images (at least 300 dpi) and should help you communicate the point you are trying to make.

Give the reader room to breathe.

What we mean by that is not to clutter the information on your postcard. There should be a comfortable amount of “nothing” in some areas of the postcard. Done right, this will give your postcard a very pleasing look and will allow the reader to find the key points easily.

Choose the right postcard size.

This is especially important if you plan to mail your postcards. The USPS First-Class Mail rate is 23c a piece for postcards up to 4.25 inches high by 6 inches long, any size bigger than that jumps to 37c a piece. This can really add up if you are doing a large mailing.

Proof read, proof read, proof read!

We cannot stress this enough. Before you give any order to a printer please make it a rule to always spell check and proof read your artwork before you hand it off. This simple rule will save you a lot of time and unnecessary expense.
